Auchencairn is only 8 miles from Castle Douglas on the Solway coast. Screel House is 1 mile North of the village and dates back to 1790. It has been gradually extended over the years. The impressive house overlooks fields and stands in 2 acres of open gardens which visitors are welcome to use. Being set well back from the road and above road level, Orchardton Bay can be seen at high water. Guests may be woken by the varied country sounds of rooks in the spring, cattle in the summer, geese in the autumn and pheasants in the winter.
Jane and Guy have lived here since 1999, since Guy retired from the Royal Navy, and thoroughly enjoy welcoming visitors into their family home. In the early part of the year, the garden produces an array of spring flowers, and the woods behind the house are a carpet of blue when the bluebells appear. In the summer and autumn there is an abundance of orchard fruit and soft fruit. There is ample parking in front of the house.
Children are welcome but both rooms only have double beds. A cot can be provided in guest's own room if requested. Jane and Guy are happy, with advance notice, for guests to bring their dogs. However, for the comfort of other guests, they are not permitted upstairs. The garden perimeter is not 'dog proof' and guests must be responsible for their own dog.
We offer a full Scottish Aga-cooked Breakfast with some optional extras, or comprehensive Continental Breakfast all sourced from Castle Douglas' extensive local shops. Garden grown fruit is always available.
Breakfast timing is negotiable but usually between 8 and 9 am and is served in the Dining Room.
We also offer an evening meal but we do need some notice. The meal is available from 7.30 pm and costs £20 for 3 courses including tea or coffee. We do not hold a licence so if you like a drink with your meal you are welcome to bring your own wine and we'll supply the opener and the glasses!
Finally this is a strictly no smoking house.
